Beyond fundraising - the future of sustainable hospice funding
The traditional hospice funding model is under pressure. With NHS contributions declining and the demand for end-of-life care rising, hospices must look beyond the usual “fundraising pond.”
St Helena’s Hospice have found a solution in social enterprise. By monetising skills it already possesses, the hospice isn’t just asking for donations – it is providing essential services that fuel its core mission.
Within a year of trading, its social enterprise launched with franchise partner, Total Clean, had generated over £1 million in income with all profits going back to support the hospice keep on providing quality services and achieve more financial sustainability.

A bit more about Total Clean in Support of St Helena
Hospices are facing significant funding challenges, with NHS grant contributions declining in real time. As a result, St Helena recognised that it needed to take responsibility for generating its own income to close this gap. It did this through the establishment of a commercial business – Total Clean in Support of St Helena, a franchise business, which the hospice became a franchisee in.
The business, which operates as a social enterprise provides cleaning services for commercial businesses, as well as schools, St Helena itself and another hospice. Most of these are regular contracts but it also carries out one-off deep cleans.
100% of the profits generated from this business flow back into St Helena to help fund our charitable purpose – supporting people in NE Essex at end of life.
