Our Co-op

You might know Co-op from doing business with us, or maybe you’ve already joined us as a member. We’re one of the world’s largest consumer co-operatives, the UK’s sixth biggest food retailer, the leading funeral services provider, an electrical products retailer, a major general insurer and a growing legal services business.

We’re a social enterprise owned by millions of members who have a say in how we’re run, the work we do in communities and the issues we campaign on.

Why we’re different

As well as having clear goals for our business, we’re also well-known for being a leader in community-led programmes and achieving social goals. We exist to meet members’ needs and stand up for the things they believe in.

We’re backing Social Saturday because we’re proud of the great impact social enterprises are having in communities across the UK every day, it’s something we really believe in and Steve Murrells, Co-op Group CEO, has this to say:

We’re delighted to be supporting Social Saturday – it’s a great way to let people know there’s a different way of doing business that meet the needs and expectations of consumers today. The Co-op was created back in 1844 with a set of values and principles that serve a social purpose. This difference is something we know our members value and increasingly see as being relevant both to themselves and within their communities, but also in addressing issues that our country faces today.

Co-ops are about making society a better place to be, and that’s been our role since we were founded, and it’s our responsibility to carry that forward for the co-operators of tomorrow.

Together we make great things happen

There are lots of ways we work with our communities to make them better places to live, work and grow up in. From giving money back to local causes, bringing people together using our Member Pioneers and campaigning on issues that are important to our members.

We’re giving back with the Local Community Fund

The Co-op Local Community Fund is our way of giving back to our members and their communities by giving money to local causes that our members care about. By choosing Co-op our members have helped raise £9 million for causes all over the UK.

Meet the Member Pioneers

We have an army of people who share our passion for making a difference in communities across the UK, they’re called Member Pioneers. They get people talking about what matters most and work with Co-op Members, colleagues and the local causes we support to tackle issues and get things done.

We’re tackling loneliness

Co-op members and colleagues have raised a huge £6 million to tackle loneliness in the UK. And with the money raised, we’re funding new British Red Cross services to help people who are experiencing loneliness feel more connected to their community.

Shape your Community Events

We’re holding a series of Shape your Community events to give everyone the chance to meet their Members’ Council representative, tell us about the things they think we should campaign on, what they’d do to improve their community and give us ideas about what Co-op can do to help.

Small things add up to a big difference

And it’s not just communities in the UK that benefit from the good things we do, many of our products help communities in the developing world, like our Fairtrade wine and chocolate, and bottled water.

We champion Fairtrade

We’ve proudly supported the development of Fairtrade since it launched all the way back in 1994. We sold the UK’s first Fairtrade bananas and now we make lots of Co-op branded products Fairtrade too. So when you buy wine or chocolate from our stores, you can be sure everyone in the supply chain is treated fairly.

We’re committed to fighting water poverty

For more than 10 years, we’ve worked with the One Foundation to champion the need to invest in water sanitation in countries such as Kenya and Malawi. For every litre of Co-op still, sparkling and flavoured water sold, we donate 3p to The One Foundation and we recently extended this to donate 1p per litre from all the branded bottles of water we sell too.
