Steve Murrells became Co-op Group CEO in March 2017 having previously led the Co-op’s Food business. Steve has overall responsibility for all the Co-op’s businesses – Food, Funeralcare, Insurance, Legal Services and the newly launched Co-op Health. Steve has also overseen the acquisition of Nisa Retail Limited which now sees the Co-op wholesale to over 7,700 stores across the UK. The Co-op is the UK’s largest mutual business with more than 4.5 million members, 63,000 colleagues and a presence in every postal region of the country. Steve has developed a bold vision for the Co-op, to ‘Co-operate for a fairer world’, and has led the organisation in campaigning boldly on issues such as violence against shop workers, modern slavery, racial inequality and food poverty.
As well as being a social enterprise itself, the Co-op has been a strong supporter of the social enterprise movement supporting SEUK’s large public facing campaigns, including this year’s Choose Communities: Buy Social campaign.
Steve will be speaking on the second day of the conference at a session focused on how can social enterprise deliver solutions that work to revitalise communities.
