We believe that social enterprise is the future of business. With an ever-expanding membership of well over a thousand – we’re the largest social enterprise network in the UK. From building markets for social enterprises to large-scale public facing campaigns such as Social Saturday, we exist to amplify the voice of our members and get social enterprise on the radars of decision makers across sectors. We also carry out leading research to build the evidence base for social enterprises. As well as operating nationally we have a strong regional presence in communities through our Social Enterprise Places Programme. Our members can get involved in all aspects of our work and are at the heart of everything we do.

Working with business

All businesses regardless of their set up have a role to play in creating a fairer, more sustainable world. We have unrivalled business relationships working with some of the biggest companies in the UK to support social enterprises through their supply chains, people and networks. In 2016 we launched the ground-breaking Buy Social Corporate Challenge, which has seen some of the country’s largest corporates commit to spending £1 billion with the sector. We believe that businesses can use the money they already spend through their procurement practices to transform lives.

Working with the public sector 

54% of social enterprises do business with the public sector and embracing social enterprises can lead to real benefits in your community. We work with local authorities, CCGs and other public bodies to enable them to use their commissioning power to buy from social enterprises. Doing so can reduce inequalities, keep spend local and save money. We were the driving force behind the Social Value Act and can work with you to build your social value priorities. We also have a strong track record working with housing associations to help them maximise their own social value.

Our strategy

We have three main workstreams – Buy Social, Social Value and our Social Enterprise Places programme, all of which aim to build markets and support social enterprises at a national and local level.

Our members are at the centre of everything we do. They inform, deliver and support each area of our work. 

Buy Social is SEUK’s flagship campaign that aims to build markets for social enterprises among the general public as well as the private and public sectors. It challenges all of us to think about where we buy our goods and services from, and the social impact of our purchasing decisions.

Social Enterprise Places are towns, cities, villages and zones that are ‘hotspots’ of social enterprise activity.  We are celebrating these areas, helping them to promote their status, supporting them and bringing them together to share learning.

The Social Value Act, which came into force in January 2013, requires public bodies, including councils, to consider choosing providers based on the social value created in an area and not on cost alone. Together with our members, we were instrumental in ensuring that the Social Value Act became law, and have been recognised by the Third Sector Excellence Awards for our achievements, winning the Big Impact of the Year Award 2012. We work with the public and private sectors to help them build social value into their commissioning and procurement.
