Job description

There are about 2,000 LGBTI people claiming asylum in the UK every year because of their sexuality, gender identity or intersex status. When they come to the UK they are still not safe. They are often abused in refugee accommodation by other refugees who come from the same or similar countries to the one they are escaping; they become homeless and depressed; and they are rejected by their ethnic community and live in poverty.

The job involves meeting with LGBTI asylum seekers on a regular basis to establish their suitability to access Micro Rainbow’s housing and socio-economic inclusion programmes and to support them to access the services they need (healthcare, counselling, etc.). The ideal candidate is passionate about equality and has the ability to connect and empathise with vulnerable people whilst maintaining strict professional boundaries.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Replying to new enquiries by email, speaking to LGBTI asylum seekers on the phone, booking risk assessments,
  • Making referrals to other organisations and partners for counselling, housing, and other support.
  • Undertaking risk assessments and liaising with other support services,
    immigration lawyers and referrers,
  • Assisting with the moving of LGBTI asylum seekers into Micro Rainbow’s houses, including welcoming them and undertaking area orientation,
  • Managing the opening of new safe houses (coordinating deliveries, contractors
    and requesting quotes and etc.),
  • Supporting Micro Rainbow’s residents regularly by phone and in person,
  • Assisting the Moving On Officer in finding permanent accommodation for LGBTI
refugees and promoting moving on opportunities to residents,
    • Ensuring Micro Rainbow houses are maintained to the highest standards,
    • Responding promptly to maintenance requests by the residents,
    • Travelling regularly to Leeds, Sheffield, and Liverpool,
    • Attending relevant meetings with stakeholders in the area,
    • Undertaking small admin and office tasks,
    • Supporting the project manager as required,
    • Any other outreach task that will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of
    Micro Rainbow’s operations and impact.
