Introduction

Parents 1st was founded as a non-profit organisation about 10 years ago. It specialises in effective and sustainable early prevention peer support during the critical life transition of becoming a parent. Volunteer programmes currently operate in South Essex, Tower Hamlets and Derby. Parents 1st is well known as a brand on a national level. Their ethos is to achieve social impact by helping babies to have the best possible start in life by offering early intervention for vulnerable parents through dedicated peer support during pregnancy, birth and beyond. Parents 1st has just started to set up an Open Source platform to share its resources, amounting to approximately 3,000 documents, and key operating manual with the wider community. The idea is to create a platform that not only shares all knowledge and documentation gathered since the organisation’s inception free of charge, but also to create an on-line community so that new and existing programmes can flourish and network with each other. The platform will address several user groups, such as new and existing peer support programme leaders, social enterprises, public sector commissioners, academics, field practitioners, parents and volunteers. Partnerships working with organisations and individuals will be actively encouraged to contribute to the content of the new platform.

Overview of the role:

At present, the implementation of the new platform is ongoing. A PR agency has been appointed to accompany the launch of the platform. During the implementation phase, the job holder will be required to work closely with the PR agency, Parents 1st CEO and the project team to ensure a smooth transition from the external agency. During the implementation phase, the role holder will assist the external agency with the proposed communication strategy and campaign. Following the project launch and once the handover is completed, the job holder will be required to work independently as well as part of the team responsible for the Open Source platform. As such, the job holder will need to continue developing all aspects of an internal and external communication strategy, including social media. This role provides a unique opportunity for the successful applicant to contribute to the success of the new Open Source platform from the start and to learn on the job as induction and training will be provided.

Main responsibilities:

During the implementation of the Open Source platform, the job holder will be required to:

  • Work closely with the CEO of Parents 1st and the project manager
  • Ensure a smooth handover from the PR agency at the end of the launch
  • Act as a key contact between Parents 1st and the PR agency. Once the handover from the PR agency has been completed, the job holder will be required to work independently as well as part of a (virtual) team.

Once the new platform has been launched, the job holder will also be required to:

  • Continue to develop and implement the overall communications strategy
  • Develop the internal communications strategy to ensure consistent messaging and that staff and volunteers of Parents 1st and affiliates are kept up to date and able to contribute as much as possible to the new platform - Draft press releases, respond to media enquiries and nurture national and media relations
  • Continue developing and implementing the social media strategy
  • Lead on the production of materials, including campaign e-bulletins, briefing papers, campaign maps, flyers and other promotional materials as required
  • Represent Parents 1st during a campaign at internal and external events as required
  • Contribute to plan, execute and evaluate stages of the campaign, including collating communications statistics as and when required
  • Assist with administrative or other related tasks as and when necessary.

Essential skills and experience required:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good organisational skills
  • Able to communicate appropriately with a diverse range of contacts
  • Able to plan, organise and prioritise work to deadlines and under pressure
  • Excellent team working skills as well as the ability to work on own initiative/remotely with minimum supervision
  • Able to demonstrate a creative approach to the development of future campaign materials - Experience of developing and implementing communication strategies, including social media
  • Experience of writing campaign materials, press releases and case studies in a clear and concise way, with high standards of accuracy, with a view to motivating others and within agreed editorial standards
  • Experience of working with the media, including inputting into strategic development
  • Experience of writing/proof-reading articles, newsletters and/or reports to tight deadlines
  • Experience with producing short, authentic videos for promotional purposes
  • Ability and willingness to travel to team meetings in London (minimum monthly).

Desirable skills and experience required:

  • Experience of working from home and managing work, time and communication with colleagues accordingly
  • Experience of working for a charitable organisation
  • An understanding of the issues that new parents, volunteers and charitable organisations face
  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally to other parts of the UK (with travel not exceeding 10% p.a.).
