The Micro-Placements Programme is a new initiative from City, University of London which aims to place students from low socio-economic backgrounds into short-term career-exploration projects. The purpose is to enhance students’ core employability skills and to help develop their CVs through work experience opportunities across a variety of sectors. This programme supports City’s community engagement which looks to form unique links with Business and the Professions.

About Micro-Placements projects

  • They are short-term projects which last between two and five weeks
  • They can be full-time or part-time in line with the needs of your organisation
  • They take place in June and August after students’ exams
  • They enable you to offer students project management opportunities and the chance to tackle real business issues
  • They are focused on providing a specific project for the student to complete, alongside more general work shadowing

Benefits of hosting a Micro-Placements Project

  • Gain a trained, pro-active and committed City student for up to five weeks

Get involved

Micro-Placement projects should have a defined goal and can be either self-contained or form part of a larger, ongoing project. Work on projects should be complemented with work shadowing of employees to provide students with an insight into what it is like to work at your organisation. If you believe you have a suitable project for this coming round of Micro-Placements, or if you have any questions or would like to discuss potential projects, please contact us at

This is a Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) funded initiative and is currently only available across the following disciplines: accounting and finance, actuarial science, law, mathematics, politics, psychology and sociology.
