The Digbeth Social Enterprise Quarter was launched as an SE Place in Dec 2013 and as part of its action plan it was identified that there was an aspiration to launch Birmingham as a Social Enterprise City within the next 5 years.  DSEQ has always been a sector led initiative, with key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, as is the steering group to launch Birmingham as an SE City.  Our history is rooted with the Cadburys and other social reformers and we continue to innovate today with large consortiums winning big contracts through procurement and a range of SE’s working in corporate supply chains

Birmingham has the second largest number of social enterprises after London and has an exciting environment to support new and existing SE’s with programme of support offered by SSE, Locality, ISE and Co-Ops. Our recent baseline survey for the Social Enterprise City identified 564 enterprises.

Over 200 people and 50 organisations attended the Birmingham City Drive 2018 Social Enterprise FestivalThe event was a major showcase for Birmingham’s incredibly vibrant social enterprise sector. The event was organised by social enterprise development agency, iSE and supported by Wates Group and Birmingham City Council.

Key objectives for Birmingham Social Enterprise City

1. To create awareness of social enterprises in Birmingham to promote business growth and an increase in social value across all sectors

2. To build a new ‘Alliance’ for social change and community benefit that has the power to ignite the social economy – SE’s, ethical businesses, trading 3rd sector and businesses with a genuine social mission, public and private sector.

3. To ensure that Birmingham as a social enterprise city is widely acknowledged and more widely understood amongst mainstream media, the wider public and the wider business community.

4. Build capacity in the social economy to respond strategically and operationally to key opportunities in the City such as the Commonwealth Games and the continued development of HS2.
