Causes in Wales are being encouraged to apply for the Co-op’s local community fund when applications open on 5 March.

Since launching in September 2016 the fund has paid out over £1.1 million to 515 causes in Wales, and more than £20 million to 8,000 organisations across the United Kingdom.

A wider range of community and co-operative organisations can now apply for the fund. The Co-op is looking in particular to fund projects that bring people together and make a difference in their local community.

Causes currently being supported by the fund in Wales are many and varied and range from Wrexham Hospital League of Friends in North Wales to Bridgend Young Carers in the South.

By joining the Co-op’s membership scheme shoppers can contribute to the money raised for the causes. They can choose which cause they wish to support as well as find out more about member rewards and how the fund works here: www.coop.co.uk/membership.

When a Co-op member buys own-brand products they earn a five per cent reward for themselves with a further one per cent going to local good causes.

The Co-op has 4.6 million active members including 1,240,000 recruited since the new scheme began on 21 September 2016.

Applications for the scheme close on 8 April: for more information visit coop.co.uk/causes
