Emma-Jane Stevenson - Engine Shed
Edinburgh's famous Engine Shed café, established in 1989, offers training to people with a range of learning disabilities. Trainees at the café work alongside staff in order to develop the skills and confidence necessary for a successful transition into the world of paid work. Training programmes also extend to work experience with local employers as well as the opportunity to study for relevant vocational qualifications. Trainees work in the bakery, the food processing unit, the shop and the café as well as doing external catering.
Emma-Jane Stevenson is Marketing Assistant for Engine Shed.
After travelling for a year in Australia she landed the role due to her previous experience working in private companies and the local council.
She spoke to the Social Enterprise Coalition about how she feels about her career move into social enterprise.
"I couldn't imagine leaving to do marketing in a private company, I think I'm set here for my days. I feel totally and completely fulfilled here. It's more varied. You have the normal everyday stuff but it's not mundane."
"I actually love my job. Although it's nine to five, it doesn't feel it, I never look at the clock. The trainees are just amazing and their presence keeps you so grounded. They are what keep you here.
"The staff are great as well. It's so relaxed, there isn't a rush about things, and although we all have different opinions on how some affairs should go, it all comes together to work like a treat. I think that's because it's an open environment and a very happy place to work. I used to hate Mondays but now on Sunday I don't feel that dread."
"To somebody who is deciding between a career in the private sector or working for a social enterprise, I would say that here they have a different outlook, they don't see it from their own selfish needs.
In a private company it's mundane and you're just generating money for the company owners whereas in a social enterprise like this one you're creating an opportunity for people who need it."
