Social Value Summit


Now in its 4th year, the Social Value Summit is the leading event in its field, attracting over 300 leaders from across the private, public and social sectors. It is organised by Social Enterprise UK & Interserve, supported by Business in the Community.

This opening session, featuring four leaders in their field, will set out the opportunities and challenges facing all sectors, and the potential role of social value, social enterprise and the private sector in creating a fairer society and a more sustainable economy.

1) Social Value in Infrastructure - part 1: built environment

This session will look at the potential of infrastructure spending and programmes to unlock and create social value of benefit to all. How can investment in homes and buildings also help improve lives and communities? And what is the leading practice from within different sectors…and the big challenges we need to overcome? 

2) Crunching the numbers - the monetisation of social value

Measurement of social value remains a central issue. Translating social value into numbers and pounds is at the centre of some social value work, but questioned by others. This session will showcase different approaches and debate how they can build confidence and credibility, whilst also making the case for social value to different audiences.

3) Cross-sector working - building the capacity to deliver

There is a growing acceptance amongst many that one sector, be that private, public or social, doesn’t have all the answers, that none can tackle the challenges we face alone and that strategic partnerships are also at the heart of thriving businesses. Hear from those engaged in trying to build these partnerships and learn lessons about what works - and how to get things done.

4) Outcomes masterclass - with Ben Carpenter, Social Value UK
Picking the right outcomes are at the centre of good measurement practice, for commissioners and providers alike. This workshop will take a deep dive into the risks and rewards of getting this right, and help organisations think through and select the outcomes that are strategic, smart and sensible. 

5) Possibilities: the (legal) can-dos of commissioning - with Julian Blake, Joint Head of Charity & Social Enterprise Department,  at Bates Wells Braithwaite

A session with legal experts and practitioners on what is possible in commissioning and viewing the Social Value Act not as a piece of legislation to comply with, but as something with great potential that provides opportunities to do things differently.

Infrastructure is often thought of purely as roads and buildings, but the social infrastructure that underpins all our lives is equally important. Hear from leaders in their field with expert insight and good practice in social value in childcare, community transport, social care and housing; and find out what comes next with this important agenda.

2) Social Value in its Place - place-based approaches to social value
Vidhya Alakeson, CEO, Power to Change
Mat Roberts, Director of Sustainability, Interserve

Hear how funders and providers are thinking about how they approach ‘place’ in the current Brexit-meets-devolution-meets-austerity landscape - and how they seek to maximise the social value they create. This will include a look at the progress of an internal ‘social value mapping tool’, and also a new programme seeking to support community business in different local areas.

3) Return to Tender: leading procurement practice

Nice words and strategies about social value don’t amount to anything unless they become real in tenders, contracts, agreements and procurement. In this session, you can hear about the challenges, the difficult decisions, and the realities of trying to maximise social value through procurement - in the private, public and social sectors.

5) Social Value Update - with Nancy Towers & James Butler from Social Enterprise UK
As the social value agenda continues to grow, new people are finding out about it all the time. Get the low-down in this session on:

  • where the Act came from & the key information
  • the current state of play
  • the most-up-to-date research (on local authorities, housing and some early headlines on clinical commissioning groups)
  • what might come next from central government - and post-EU....
